School Entry Point/Grade Level Chart

Preschool: Ages from 2 to 5 years old. Preschool education is important because it gives the child a head start through social interactions and how to verbally communicate with others.

Pre-K:  (or Pre-Kindergarten) from 4 to 5 years old. Pre-K is an initiative to improve access to pre-primary schools for children in the USA. There is much more than teaching a child colors, numbers, and shapes.

Kindergarten: Ages from 5 to 6 years old- held in a Kindergarten School. Formal Kindergartens  introduces the first stages of formal education. Prepares them for elementary school.

Elementary School: In some parts of the United States, “primary school” refers to a school covering kindergarten through to second grade or third grade (K through 2 or 3); the “elementary school” includes grade three through five or grades four to six.

Middle School: In the United States, “middle schools” and “junior high schools” are schools that span varying combinations of grades 5 to 8, or, 6-8 (most commonly),  and sometimes 7-9.

High School:

While there is no set standard for American high schools, some generalizations can be made. Students aged approximately 14 to 18 years of age. Pupils enter around the age of 14 and pass through four years:

  • Freshman ( ninth grade)
  • Sophomore ( tenth grade)
  • Junior (eleventh grade)
  • Senior (twelfth grade)

Problem

Parent Educators often find it confusing when they are purchasing STEM equipment for their children.

Products are sold either by their “Grade Level” or the children’s age. They often incorrectly purchase items that are for a different learning level.

Below are two charts that can be useful when making purchasing decisions.

Age Placement Chart

It is difficult to do an accurate age placement because different school districts can make changes.

However here is a general rule of thumb staring with elementary school.

“1st grade” (6–7 years old)
“2nd grade” (7–8 years old)
“3rd grade” (8–9 years old)
“4th grade” (9–10 years old)
“5th grade” (10–11 years old)
“6th grade” (11–12 years old)
“7th grade” (12–13 years old)
“8th grade” (13–14 years old)
“9th grade” (14–15 years old)
“10th grade” (15–16 years old)
“11th grade” (16–17 years old)
“12th grade” (17–18 years old)
